LALAY LODGE

Ngapali, Myanmar
BACK

A sustainable lodge in the heart of a local fishing community, this project was envisaged to be an embedded part of the local aesthetic in every way. We wanted this to be as much a happy home to the staff as it is a welcome retreat for the guests who stay. The intent for this to be the village’s lodge steered every decision from architecture, to construction to the sourcing and cooking of local produce for meals. Through this concept, any guest experience is interwoven with the unique rhythm of Maung Shwe Lay.

The lodge has nine simple guest rooms and an open restaurant pavilion. It is powered by solar energy, uses grey water for the garden and is plastic free. Materials were sourced locally and used in methods as locals would use. From the thatch and architectural details like doors, windows and fringes on the buildings, to the chairs with local Rakhine fabric on the cushions, this lodge seems less to have been constructed than to have grown into this site.
